How To Improve Golf Swing

Golf is one of those activities where the public is sold a tremendous amount of garbage about how they can improve.  Other similar activities are investing in real estate, trading the stock and forex markets and making money on the internet.  Why is golf lumped in with these other activities?  Because golf is addictive, and millions of people play golf.  At the same time, it is an activity where only a few people are very successful.  All of the other activities mentioned are similar.

Yet, what most people do not understand is that there are two types of people who become very good at the game of golf.  The first is the natural athlete who tends to play most sports well.  Quarterbacks in football are among the athletes that have a tendency to pick up golf and play it well.  The other type is the person who is willing to really work at their game.  Most people do not fall into either category, and find themselves buying the new clubs, training aids and videos to help their game, and typically have nothing to show for it.

For any of these people, including the talented athletes, to take their game to the next level, they need to work at it.  It’s really quite that simple.  Golf is a difficult game, and requires a lot of practice.  Most good golfers really don’t mind the practice.  In fact, many actually enjoy it.  Most people don’t, but that is because they don’t know HOW to practice!

To Improve Your Golf Swing, You Must Have A Plan

The first thing you must do to improve your golf swing is develop a plan.  This plan must start with the basic fundamentals of the golf swing, starting with the grip, stance and posture, how to properly move the body throughout the swing, how to swing the club properly, and knowledge of how the club actually works.

Most people really have no idea how the club itself works!  The fact is that the clubs are designed by very smart engineers who are seeking to maximize the ability of the club to make the ball go farther and straighter.  Yet, most people are unaware of how the club works.  They don’t realize that they don’t need to try and help the ball in the air themselves by trying to manipulate the club with their hands and arms.  Instead, they should learn how to let the club do the work for them by learning how to hold the club properly, address the ball properly, and move the body properly during the swing.

A Good Golf Swing Is Based In Sound Fundamentals

A good plan should address the following issues:

  1. The proper grip
  2. The property  stance and posture
  3. How the body  moves in the golf swing
  4. The proper swing plane
  5. How the swing plane affects ball flight
  6. The ball flight laws
  7. Any physical issues that the student may have

A good plan will then incorporate a number of drills and routines that will allow the student to improve quickly, IF they practice them diligently.  This practice can be done at home or at the golf course or driving range.  Also, one of the best training aids a golfer can use is a mirror.  Utilizing a mirror while working on your golf swing provides tremendous feedback, and will result in faster learning.

When you head to the driving range and practice green, it is necessary to have a plan before you begin.  Most golfers never have a clue about what they should be working on when they show up at the facility.  This makes it impossible to improve.

With all this in mind, any golfer should know that there is no quick fix in golf.  Golf is a difficult game, and to become an expert golfer requires significant practice.  To learn how to improve your golf swing, forget about the hot new fad golf swing, and learn the proper fundamentals.  Practice these consistently with a proper plan, and you will improve far more quickly than any new golf club or training aid will allow.
